Culture
The Hästholmen-Ytterön nature reserve lies in the eastern Karlskrona archipelago. This is where you will find the Bröderna Mårtenssons boatyard, founded in 1912 and widely known even outside Blekinge. The boatyard is unique in cultural history terms and is completely preserved in practical terms, with all its equipment and fittings. Thousands of wooden boats were built here using traditional methods by three generations of Mårtenssons right up until the 1990s. The brothers developed the hunting canoe, with sails, typical of Blekinge, and the snipa, a double-ended craft usually fitted with an engine. Both the boats were seaworthy, nippy and easily manoeuvrable in the often shallow archipelago. In 1997, the Bröderna Mårtenssons boatyard was declared a listed building.
