Description
An important fairway leading to Karlskrona, barriers were sunk in Bollösund to prevent the entry of ships in the past. Three ships were sunk here to prevent access from enemy forces, the bomb ketch Tordö and the frigate Sprengtporten sunk in 1799 and 1810 respectively, and one unidentified vessel. A larger stone barrier was built here in the mid-nineteenth century.
The shipwrecks stick up about 4 metres from the bottom.
The frigate Sprengtporten previously sailed to the Swedish colony of Saint-Barthélemy, a bare island with an area of about 25 square kilometres, where its crew founded the town of Gustavia, used as a centre for the slave trade.
