Description

Slättö Sand is one of Sweden’s largest inland drift sand fields. A distinctive nature area with great geological and botanical values in a landscape otherwise characterised by bogs, agricultural land and forests. The reserve has a car park, an information board, more than 2 km of footpaths, a viewpoint, a composting toilet, a barbecue area and an accessible rest area.

At the turn of the century, Slättö Sand was a distinctive, treeless area where sand was blown around freely. Since then, the planting of trees has changed the area’s desert character, which now has to be maintained through felling and prescribed burning.

Follow the marked footpath to the viewpoint. You can spot insects on the open sandy areas along the path. Northeast of the ‘viewing hill’, inside the forest, you can find mysterious sand mounds. They have been formed by sand being blown into and accumulating in old juniper bushes. Parts of the reserve are sensitive to excess footfall, so please stick to the footpaths.
