Description

Päggonätto Nature Reserve is located in the far north of Värmland, close to the border with Norway. The area, which covers more than 600 hectares, has a distinct wilderness character with vast marshes and relatively untouched natural forests.
From the nature reserve, you can see a wide view of sloping mires with blue mountains in the distance. The reserve gets its character from the ridge that runs through the area and which leads to large differences in level with peaks and flat valleys.

The reserve was established in 2019 to preserve the area's mosaic of mires and older coniferous forest and also to maintain the area's untouched character.

Animals and plants

The bog area has a rich flora, including species such as meadow nymphs and briar brush. The bog complex is also of zoological interest with a bird fauna worthy of protection, where species such as the green leg and the heath pipit are found. On and around the bogs there is old high-altitude spruce forest with gnarled trees, plenty of dead wood and a large number of old birches. The old trees are home to violet-grey thorn lichen, Norwegian beak lichen and longhorn beetle. In the lush spruce forest on the slope of Pottmäk, the flora is rich and here you can find, among other things, Nordic wolfsbane and whitetop buttercup.
