Description
Fagerön is located in a protected inner archipelago south of Östhammar. Here you are greeted by a varied landscape with meadows where animals graze, barren rocky areas, lush deciduous forest and lots of flowers and butterflies. The shallow water is teeming with seabirds.
For hundreds of years, the meadows have been mowed and animals have grazed on Fagerön. This has created a landscape with many species that need light and air to thrive. Over a hundred unusual animals, plants and fungi have been found. One of the rarest is the mnemosyne butterfly, one of our most endangered butterflies. The butterfly needs a landscape like the one on Fagerön, with leafy groves and grassy meadows.
Head to Fagerön in early summer to enjoy the fantastic flowers in the meadows and groves. You'll get a surprisingly southern Swedish feel in the planted, but self-regenerating, beech forest.
On Fagerön there is peace and quiet. Remember to be careful when traveling through the area as many of the unusual species that live here are sensitive to disturbance. Special rules also apply in nature reserves, read more by clicking on the link to the regulations.
