Description
The Sanda wetland is a floodplain wetland that particularly benefits pike and birds. The wetland fills up with water during the snow melt in spring winter. The spring sun then warms up the shallow water in the wetland. The pike from Norrviken swim up the Fresta stream to the wetland to spawn. At midsummer, a dam gate is opened and the pike fry swim out into Frestabäcken and further out into Norrviken.
In summer and fall, when the wetland is empty, cows will graze there to keep the land open. As cows are large animals, small pits are created by their footprints. These encourage amphibians and birds. Cows also eat a wide variety of plants, which is good for the vegetation on the site.
There is an accessible walkway with benches so you can easily get around the wetland. You can also walk along the wetland on the Sanda meadows section of the Discovery Trail.

Facts
The wetland project is a long-term measure, but already in the first year (2022) the wetland is in use, several birds have been seen in and around the wetland, such as snipe, gray goose, mallard, heron, teal, moorhen, coot, starling, black-necked grebe and whooper swan. We have also inventoried pike and in June we could see up to a hundred pike fry, which have now swum out into Norrviken. Several local residents visit the wetland daily to experience nature and various associations in Väsby have had excursions to the wetland. In the future, there are plans to hold various events for children to learn more about plants and animals.
