Rösjöns hasselund

The grove is located on the south-facing slope on the edge of the large meadows by Lake Rösjön. Over a hundred years ago, hay was cut in the grove. Even then, trees and hazel grew on the hillside, but more sparsely than now. They used to leave bushes and trees in the meadow if the ground was dry to get more grass to cut. The trees provided a bit of shade and improved growth with their leaves, which helped to maintain the soil's moisture content each fall. Many groves of hazel and oak originated in such meadows. Today they often form valuable broadleaf woodland remnants, providing visitors with a change from the darker coniferous forest and a nice spring bloom. If you're here in spring, look out for the rare water lily, a plant that lives as a parasite on other grove plants.
