Description
When Halmstad's fortress was completed in the early 1600s, there were four city gates. Österbro was the city's eastern gateway, and the bridge was the city's only link across the Nissan, and was of great strategic importance. In 1612, it was decided to build a moat with an outer wall at the eastern end of the bridge to protect it. The artificial island, also known as a 'skans', which was created when the moat was built, naturally came to be known as the East Skans. Some of the stones from the revetment can still be seen at Kapsyl Park on the banks of the Nissan.
