Description

Norra Brassberget Nature Reserve is located in a leafy landscape with a lot of old-growth forest. It borders on the Brassberget nature reserve. Together, the two reserves extend over Lilla and Stora Brassberget. There are no marked hiking trails here, so put on proper shoes before you head out. The area is located about 4 kilometers northeast of Ramsjö and covers 141 hectares.

Along the slope you will find living and dead pine trees with black marks and damage to the trunks. Many fires have come and gone in the area over many hundreds of years.

Deciduous forest and wildlife

Up on the top of Stora Brassberget there is a deciduous forest with lots of birch and aspen. When a fire passes by, deciduous trees take the opportunity to grow in the ashes. When there are lots of deciduous trees in a fire area, it is called a leaf burn.

The aspen trees are home to the aspen jelly lichen, which thrives on leaf burns. Something yellowish and finger-like grows on the lying dead trunks of aspen that look rotten. It is the candelabra fungus, which stretches its arms up to the sky.

Several of our woodpecker species also live in the reserve. The woodpecker and the three-toed woodpecker, which peck at dead tree trunks, thrive here. They look for their favorite food under the bark, insect larvae.
