Description

The nature reserve has high biological values. This is shown by all the signal species of mosses, lichens and fungi that have been found.

The area is located on a steep southern slope. The heights are dominated by old pine forest. Further down, mixed deciduous spruce forest grows. At the foot of the slope there is a stream trough where nutrient-rich groundwater forms small marshes. The bedrock in the lower part is alkaline. This affects the vegetation so that it is lush and rich in herbs. Here and there, there are moss-covered rocky mudflats. Other important structures are sun-exposed dead wood such as aspen stumps, lying dead pines and standing dry trees of various species, and old trees, mainly pine.

The reserve was established to preserve biodiversity and the valuable natural environments. The forest has not been cultivated using modern methods and has therefore developed into a "natural forest" over a long period of time. It should be left to develop freely in the nature reserve.

The area is part of the EU's ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000.

Animals and plants

Several species are red-listed, such as the green shield moss Buxbaumia viridis, bird's foot moss Pterogonmiu racile and the blue truffle Chamonixia caespitosa. All deciduous forest-dependent woodpecker species in Sweden are also found in the area. Demanding birds that occur are white-backed woodpecker, nuthatch and wood pigeon. In the coniferous forest there are elements of aspen, birch, willow, juniper, hazel, rowan, elm, ash, lime and alder.
