Sandåns lövskog, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Värmlands län
Actions
Description
Riparian forests with a rich bird fauna dependent on deciduous forests.
The nature reserve has deciduous forest that is biologically valuable. The forest contains large trees and dead wood. Woodpeckers and other birds that nest in hollow trees thrive in this environment. Examples of less common bird species that you may see here are the lesser spotted woodpecker Dendrocopos minor, the gray woodpecker Picus canus and the common duck Parus palustris. Our common deciduous trees grow in the reserve, but also broadleaf trees such as ash, elm, oak and hazel.
There are also remains of a croft, an old sawmill and the ruins of a mill.
Animals and plants
The reserve was established to preserve and develop the area into a natural forest with plenty of dead wood. This creates important habitats for rare species. To maintain the rich deciduous forest, it must be managed. From time to time, conifers must be kept in check by clearing, felling or ring-barking.
