Fall is an excellent time for hiking in Smedjebacken.
Nature slows down and takes on beautiful shades of yellow, orange, red, and green. It’s cooler outside, and the crisp, oxygen-rich air feels wonderful to breathe. The number of visitors decreases, so you can hike with the feeling that you’re all alone in the woods and countryside.
So make the most of these beautiful fall days and head out for a hike in our local area before winter takes over the landscape.
Below are some recommendations for great hikes in Smedjebacken:
The Schisshyttan Hiking Trail
A lovely cultural trail to hike on your own. The trail follows the Schisshyttebäcken stream and showcases remnants of the area’s ironworking history from the mid-1600s, when the first blast furnace was built, up until 1922, when the last smelter was shut down. Most of the buildings have now been demolished or lie in ruins, and the forest has reclaimed the land. The hike also includes a modern mine, Lustigkulla, with a preserved steel-framed shaft. The mine is situated in a magnificent location with beautiful views from the shaft’s landing. The Schisshyttan hiking trail is included as a destination in the Bergslagen Ecomuseum.
The Långtjärnar Nature Trails
Hiking around the Långtjärnar lakes in Björsjö, featuring wonderful forests and small lakes. The Långtjärnarna nature trails follow pleasant, easy-to-hike paths around the Långtjärnarna lakes (Nedre, Mellan, and Övre Långtjärn). The Björsjö fitness trail and the Malingsbo-Klotenleden trail also pass through the area. The ponds are three glacial kettle holes and are popular “put-and-take” fishing spots. Hiking around the ponds is perfect for anyone seeking tranquility, nature, and pleasant surroundings, and you can easily choose whether to walk around one, two, or all three ponds. The best places to start and end your hike are at Mellan and Nedre Långtjärn or in the southern part of Övre Långtjärn, where parking is available. Around the ponds, there are good rest areas with barbecue sites, wind shelters, tables, and restrooms.
Bruksleden Stage 21: Malingsbo–Örtjärnen
Stage 21 is the Bruksleden’s most hilly section, featuring several fairly steep ascents. The route passes through dense forests and challenging elevation changes with scenic viewpoints. Along the trail, you have a good chance of catching a glimpse of the king of the forest. You start at Malingsbo, and the stage ends at Örtjärnen, where it connects to Stage 22, Örtjärnen–Högbyn (Fagersta), or Stage 19, Örtjärnen–Kolpen (Skinnskatteberg).
If you’d like to extend your hike, you can continue on the 45-km-long Malingsbo-Kloten Trail.
Uvberg Trail
A hike close to town on the slopes of Uvberget, passing by the observation tower at the summit. Here you’ll hike on beautiful trails and, in part, on a gravel road. At Bångtjärn, there are great places to rest, with a wind shelter and a fire pit. If you have young children with you on your hike, check out Äventüren (an adventure trail for kids), which is located right next to the trail.
