Prästängen, Naturreservat

Visiting Prästängen in spring is like stepping into a green hall. The floor is covered with a carpet of wood anemones, and oak and hazel bushes line the walls and ceiling. An intense choir of small birds provides the entertainment. The protected meadow plant buttercups grow in the open parts of the meadow. An unmarked path leads you around this little gem outside Ängelholm.

Former hay meadow

Originally Prästängen belonged to Tåstarp village. The villagers mowed the meadow with a scythe and the hay was used as winter feed for the village cattle. Oaks and hazel bushes grew much more sparsely than today. It is likely that Prästängen was even completely devoid of trees and shrubs during certain periods. In the 1800s, the meadow was farmed by the priest in Hjärnarp. He let his horse loose here and also harvested some hay from the fertile meadowland.

Butterballs and other plants

Several plants in the nature reserve are still reminiscent of the days when Prästängen was annually mowed with a scythe. Buttercups are an example of a plant that thrives in bright and open environments. They grow along the path in the southern part of the reserve. Butterballs, which are also called meadow balls and meadow balls, are protected throughout Skåne. The same applies to the orchids green night-flowering violet and woodland knotweed that grow scattered in the reserve. The rarest plant in Prästängen is probably the large goat's beard, which grows at the eastern entrance.

Outdoor life

An unmarked path makes an approximately 500 meter long loop in the small reserve. The path starts at the parking lot along the road between Ängelholm and Tåstarp. Remember to take your rubbish home.
