Description

Gammelgården in Hishult is a four-length 18th-century farmhouse with a South Gothic-style cottage. The cottage was built around 1730 in Östra Karup parish, more specifically in Eskilstorp village at the foot of Hallandsås north side. Around 1900, the roof of the ridge cottage was raised to the same level as the ridges of the herbrena, after the Nordic Museum had commissioned drawings of the original cottage.

Veinge Hembygdsförening bought the cottage in 1948 and the following year it was dismantled and stored in Veinge until 1958 when Gösta Hansson, Hishult, bought it. In 1958-61 Gösta rebuilt the cottage according to copies of the Nordic Museum's drawings. Gösta's contribution is phenomenal because he did practically all the work himself, with one arm! In 1979, the year after Gösta's death, his wife Brita Hansson donated the cottage to Södra Halland Hembygdsförening.

The three outbuildings come from Brånalt, Knäred parish. The Agricultural Board had acquired the farm and donated the buildings in return for their dismantling and removal.

In one of the barns there is a coach that was donated to the farm in 1964. The coach was originally owned by the vicar Lundberg, Veinge. After his death, the carriage was called in at auction in 1901 by Per Jönsson, Sofielund, Vallberga, and from there it came to Hishult. In 1992 it underwent a renovation at Varberg Museum. In order to get the interior in good condition, the coach has been re-clothed.
