Description

The almost 2 square kilometer Hajde nature reserve is an exceptional example of an almost disappeared forest type on Gotland, a forest that is completely unaffected by modern forestry methods. Instead, it is shaped by grazing and by the fact that all felling has been carried out by picking. In other words, individual trees have been felled and selected for their suitability for various uses.
The forest has also long been used as grazing land for the farm's animals, and the grazing, together with extensive forestry, has created a forest of different ages with a sparsely developed shrub layer and a tufted field layer. Pine is the dominant tree species, but there is also a lot of spruce, especially where the substrate consists of sand. Many trees are of considerable age, and a few pines are more than 300 years old.

In addition to building and joinery timber, the forest in Hajde's large garden has been used for tar and lime burning. Only stumps were used for tar burning, and the last time the farm's sojde was burned was in 1947. The lime kiln was last used in 1944.

Several bird species that require old-growth forest nest in Hajde's large garden, including the tawny owl, pearl owl and goshawk.
