Description

Plant and animal life is remarkably rich, thanks to the alkaline bedrock and the low impact of forestry on the inaccessible slopes. At the top of the ridge, the view of the varied landscape is magnificent.

Old pine forests grow on the top of Råglandaberget, while large parts of the reserve are dominated by a species-rich mixed deciduous forest. There is a large proportion of southern, noble deciduous trees such as hazel, lime, maple, elm and ash. The older mixed forest in the mountainside is the core of the reserve. Here there is an abundance of things that are often lacking in managed forests, such as hollow trees, old deciduous trees, lying and standing dead trees.

The reserve was established to preserve an example of the forest landscape's diversity of biotopes and species, by preserving parts of a valuable hyperite mountain with rich flora and fauna. The reserve is part of the EU's Natura 2000 network of protected areas, and the EU's Life-Nature fund has part-financed the creation of this Natura 2000 site.

Animals and plants

The nutrient-rich hyperite rock gives rise to a rich herbaceous flora with species such as witch hazel, spring pea, sweet woodruff and several ferns. A number of rare mosses and lichens show the area's qualities as a natural forest.

The abundance of dead hardwood makes the area important for wood insects and woodpeckers. Green-winged teal, common chough and lesser spotted woodpecker are often seen, but white-backed woodpeckers have also used the mountain. Other birds attracted by the abundance of leaves include nuthatches, warblers and flycatchers.

Facilities

From the parking lot there is a marked trail, 500 m long, up to the top of the mountain. The trail goes through very hilly terrain.

The mountain slopes steeply. Parents - keep your children under supervision.
