Gislövs stjärna, Naturreservat

Gislöv's Star is a small deciduous forest area in the middle of the open plains of Österlen. The easily accessible reserve is a popular hiking area and the area has many frog-rich small waters. In spring, the ground is covered with a carpet of flowering wood anemones.

A forest on the plain

Gislöv's star consists of a broadleaf-dominated forest area surrounded by an otherwise open agricultural landscape. The area has a long forest continuity and has probably been forested since the 17th century. This makes Gislöv's Star an important refuge in the forest-poor landscape for many plants and animals. Several lichens that indicate that the forest has high natural values are found in the reserve, including the red-listed beech spring lichen.

Bird life

Large numbers of resting small birds flock to Gislöv's star, but you can also find much rarer species here. The exotically colorful summer wren with its whistling song is a regular guest in early summer and the lesser spotted woodpecker, which is dependent on access to dead or dying wood, regularly nests in the reserve.

Amphibians

Gislöv's star and its surroundings contain several frog-rich waters. In the reserve, leaf frogs are often seen in the blackberry thickets and in the natural pastures just outside you can experience the bell frog's strange song, reminiscent of distant church bells.

Old dance floor

In the southern part of the reserve is a festival site that used to be a popular dance hall. There is a parking lot adjacent to this building. Around the party place there is a park-like forest with several old oaks.

Welcome to Gislöv's star Nature Reserve

Gislöv's Stjärna is like a small tree-clad island in the middle of the flat, openfarmland. It has been like this since at least the 1600s. It is a lush oasis for people as well as plants and animals. The old dance floor and several unusual fungi and beetles remind us of this fact.

The woodland has remained firmly rooted through thecenturies, even when the surroundings were transformedinto meadows, fields, and pastures. This is what makes Gislöv's Stjärna so valuable. A whole world of fungi, lichens and insects live in the old trees. Some of the lichens and long-horn beetles are rare.

The birds sing in the spring in April and May, and the ground is carpeted with wood anemones and lesser celandine. Fire-bellied toad and common tree frog, from the surrounding ponds, compete with the bird chorus. If you are lucky, you might see a small common tree frog in the woodland scrub or hear them from higher up in the trees. Thanks to small suction cups on their feet, they are excellent climbers. Ivy also clings to the trunks of the oaks with its short sticky roots and combines with the oak leaves to form a joint crown.

Where the soil is more nutrient-rich, species such as woodruff, which smells of sweet caramel, and the pinky-purple narrow-leaved lungwort grow. It is easy to understand why we humans, for over two hundred years, have come here to dance under the shade of the woodland canopy.

Regulations

Within Gislövs stjärna Nature Reserve it is forbidden to:

• dig up, remove, drill, paint or in any other way damage soil formations,stone walls, stones, or other natural features or archaeological remains,
• remove wood or damage trees, bushes, or dead wood,
• dig up plants or pick plants for commercial use,
• collect mosses, lichens, or wood-living fungi,
• intentionally disturb wildlife,
• bring a dog that is not on a lead,
• park up caravans, camper vans or equivalent,
• drive a motor vehicle, horse ride, or cycle other than on the roads,
• light a fire,
• erect any kind of installation or put out any foreign (for the naturereserve) objects,
• put up posters, signs, notices, or equivalent items,
• introduce species of plants or animals.

Without written permission from the County Administrative Board it is also forbidden to:

• Catch insects, spiders, snails or other invertebrates other than with nets, by hand or other selective methods, with subsequent re-release within the nature reserve. This requirement does not apply to one-off specimens of each species on the basis that the record is registered inArtportalen, or equivalent national database for threatened species, and that the collection does not contravene any wildlife protection regulations.
