Description

Högarör is a
3500-year old burial cairn from the Bronze Age.

This is also a legendary site at Högarör in Ljungby, Småland. The site consists of a large Bronze Age burial cairn, set in an open landscape with surrounding woodland and elevated terrain.

The cairn itself is striking – a structure thousands of years old that has long inspired both curiosity and respect. Over time, it has become associated with a story about a hidden treasure said to lie within the mound.

According to legend, the treasure is guarded by a dragon. Anyone attempting to enter the cairn and claim the riches would not only disturb an ancient grave, but also risk encountering something beyond the human world.

It is said that people have tried, over the centuries, to open the cairn. On one occasion, a chest was reportedly found inside. However, things did not turn out as expected – the treasure never became an easy reward, and the attempts ended unsuccessfully.

The story reflects a common theme in the Land of Legends, where ancient burial sites and landscape features are seen as places where something valuable lies hidden, but protected by supernatural forces.

Visiting this site is part of a journey through the Land of Legends in Småland (Ljungby, Alvesta and Älmhult), a connected storytelling landscape where tales of supernatural beings exist alongside memories of real people and their lives.

Travelling through this landscape means moving through scenic natural settings and forgotten places, while gaining insight into how people once lived, thought, and interpreted the world around them. The stories are tied to specific locations and have been passed down through generations.

The work with the Land of Legends is internationally recognised through Land of Legends Sweden and is included in UNESCO’s register of good practices for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.

The Museum of Legends in Ljungby gathers stories from across the region and brings them to life through exhibitions and storytelling, offering a deeper understanding of places like this.

The site is accessible via a footpath and is well suited for both walking and short visits.
