Description
A Neo-Gothic Church Shaped by the Town's
History of the Church
The church is named after St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and merchants. Given Lidköping's location on the shores of Lake Vänern and its origins as a medieval trading centre, it is believed that a church stood here from a very early date.
Lidköping received its oldest known town charter in 1446, and parts of the present church still contain masonry dating from that period. Some of these original stones can be seen near the entrance to the St. Mary Chapel, which was created in the church's southern transept during the most recent restoration in 1995.
