  • Nature reserve
of 5 stars

Description

Skarvsjömyrarna is one of the county's most valuable mire areas. The reserve is a very large and diverse wilderness area with virtually unaffected mires, large areas of natural forests and unaffected streams and lakes.

The entire reserve consists of roadless land and large parts of the area are very difficult to access during the bare-ground season due to the wet bogs and watercourses. During the high tides of the rivers in May and early June, otherwise inaccessible parts of the reserve can be reached by canoe.

During the winter months, the area is relatively easily accessible to skiers and snowmobilers via the large open bogs and thanks to the existence of public and passable roads north, west and south of the reserve. Two marked snowmobile trails run through the reserve: the trail between Skarvsjöby and Pauträsk and the trail between Skarvsjöby and Fianberg.

In the northern part of the reserve there is a footpath that runs from Långnäsvägen down to the northern shore of Mejvansjön. For those interested in birds, a visit to the reserve is recommended during nights and early mornings in June. This is when the wading birds are at their most intense, and you can experience buzzing marsh warblers, rhythmically grinding black warblers, intensely teasing curlews and the peculiar flight of the snipe, whose sound is reminiscent of the sound of a horse galloping over a wooden bridge.

Directions

Skarvsjömyrarnas nature reserve is located about 20 km south of Storuman. The outer edges of the reserve are easily accessible in several places as it borders or is close to public roads and major forest roads. European Route 45 passes within a few hundred meters of the western edge of the reserve. However, most of the reserve area is difficult to access during the bare ground period due to the large wet marsh areas and difficult-to-navigate watercourses.
