From meadow to forest

In the 18th and 19th centuries, this area was both meadow and pasture. The remains of a stone wall in the middle of the nature reserve show how grazing animals were kept away from the wetter part where hay was gathered. Today the marsh has been transformed into a deciduous swamp forest with alder and ash. In the drier parts of the area, a deciduous forest with oak, beech and hornbeam has grown up with a rich shrub layer of hedge and hazel. The great variety of trees and shrubs means that birds thrive, including nuthatches, tree creepers and great spotted woodpeckers.

Moist forest with unusual mosses

The stream that meanders through the nature reserve branches out in several places and forms a valuable aquatic environment with small islands and several watercourses. The calcareous water provides good conditions for a flora with lime-favored plants. Dunmossa and rutlungmossa are two of the unique moss species that thrive in the cool, moist environment of the deciduous swamp forest. The area is mainly protected for its biological values and there are currently no marked paths.

Outdoor recreation

There is parking and a path that goes through parts of the area and on towards Ignaberga's caves. Remember to take your rubbish home.

Welcome to Gulastorp Nature Reserve

The nature reserve at Gulastorp is an area that has changed from pasture land to moist deciduous forest in the past one hundred years. The change has created an exciting forest environment with a rich bird life and rare mosses.

From meadow to forest

In the 18th and 19th century this was an area with meadows and pasture land. The remains of a stone wall in the middle of the nature reserve shows how the grazing animals were kept away from the wetter part where the hay was taken. Today the marsh has become a carr with alder and ash trees.

In the drier parts of the area a broad-leaved deciduous forest with oaks, beeches and European hornbeams has emerged with a rich shrub layer of hawthorn and hazel. The wide variety of trees and shrubs means that birds including jays, tree creepers and great spotted woodpeckers thrive here.

Damp forest with rare mosses

The creek that meanders through the nature reserve branches in several places, forming a valuable aquatic environment with smaller islands and several water furrows. The limestone rich water provides good conditions for a flora of lime-demanding plants. Woollywort (Trichocolea tomentella) and snakeskin liverwort (Conocephalum conicum) are two of the unique moss species that thrive in the cool, damp environment in the woodland carr. The area is mostly protected for its biological qualities, and at present there are no marked trails.

Regulations

In Gulastorp nature reserve it is forbidden to:

• damage fixed natural objects or surfaces,
• camp or light a fire,
• set up or spend the night in a mobile home, caravan, or equivalent,
• pick, dig up or damage plants, moss, lichen or fungi,
• deliberately break or collect and remove dead wood,
• bring unleashed dogs or other pets,
• put up boards, signs, printouts, posters or other similar items, with the exception of information signs for the nature reserve and boundary marks.

Without the permission of the County Administrative Board, it is also forbidden to:

• Collect invertebrates such as beetles or molluscs. Individual samples may be collected, provided that it does not violate the Swedish endangered species regulations and that traps are not used.
