Description
The large forest area on the northern slope of Ritjelsberget is a mosaic of wetlands, small lakes, lush stream valleys and towering spruces. The soil on Ritjelsberget is rich in nutrients. This is because there is lime and clay shale in the bedrock, which dissolves in water. At different depths in the soil, the running water moves down the slope and spreads the nutrients. The moving water is also oxygen-rich, which is good for tree roots. All this creates good growing conditions and the spruce trees grow tall and thick. This is why the forest has so quickly regained its wild and untouched appearance.
