Description
In the Tiskaretjärns nature reserve you will encounter an old-fashioned agricultural landscape with living culture and management.
The nature is characterized by the hilly landscape and the nutrient-rich hyperite bedrock. The Finns came here at the end of the 16th century and brought with them their tradition of swiddening and ant farming. The farm is a Finnish settlement that was brought under cultivation around 1625, and there is every indication that the area has been farmed continuously since then.
The reserve is nestled like an oasis in a vast coniferous forest landscape. Part of the reserve is Atikullen with its rich flora. The name is derived from the Finnish word Athio, which means desolate (desert hill). The reserve is managed as far as possible according to the old ways and traditions.
The nature reserve was established to preserve and manage the old-fashioned agricultural landscape, using traditional methods and tools as far as possible. Grazing should therefore be done primarily with endangered breeds of livestock. The area is part of the EU's network of valuable nature, Natura 2000.
Animals and plants
The form of management used in the reserve - mowing with a scythe after flowering, animal grazing, etc. - is necessary to preserve the plants, animals and insects that are currently endangered. Many of the plants found in meadows have leaf rosettes, which are exposed after mowing and grazing. This allows the plants to absorb the sun's rays in late summer, providing them with enough nutrients to survive until next year. Among the rosette plants are hayloft, hayflower, hayclover, bunchgrass and redbay. In addition to rosette plants, fall-growing species are also common. They find it very difficult to survive without mowing or grazing. Autumn-growing species include field gentian, hay rattle, meadow rattle, and snakeweed.
Because of the area's character as an oasis in the forest landscape, it is a popular refuge for moose and deer. The hazel stand also attracts a number of nuthatches in the fall.
The domestic animals in the reserve are endangered landraces, including red cows and Värmland sheep.
