Description
The area has been recognized for its richness in basic minerals, which provide a special moss and vascular plant flora in and below the slopes.
Skutan is part of a ridge running north-south with an altitude of between 180 and 280 meters above sea level. The area has steep slopes to the east, south and west, with mostly shaded, moss-covered heathland.
The reserve was established to preserve a varied rift valley landscape with rare species associated with shaded heathland, tall spruce forest, deciduous trees, old and late-growing trees and dead wood.
Animals and plants
The threatened species that occur in the reserve include wood moss, broktagel, violet-gray thorn lichen, green shield moss, aspen jelly lichen, raggbok and three-toed woodpecker. If you are lucky, you may hear or perhaps see: capercaillie, wolverine, black grouse, barn owl, pearl owl or barn owl.

The reserve is located in Värmlands län, Eda municipality, 6 kilometers south of Koppom. Directions from Arvika. Follow road 172 northwest until you reach road 177. Turn left (south) and continue 12.5 kilometers. Turn in at Mosstakan on the road towards Ulvshuvdane and Ofredshöjden and continue 2 kilometers to the parking lot on the left side of the road.Alternative route from Arvika follow road 172 southwest, turn right (north) on road 177 towards Koppom, turn right (east) at Mosstakan.
Regulations
In the reserve it is forbidden to:
- collect invertebrates, such as beetles or land snails
- collect mosses, lichens or wood fungi
- damaging or removing trees and shrubs, including dead wood such as lying or standing dry trees or dry branches
- driving vehicles.
Without the permission of the County Administrative Board, it is prohibited to:
- make organized use of the area for commercial purposes for schools and institutions, regularly use the area for carrying out scientific or other research.
