Skansen, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve

Actions

Description

Skansen is a municipal nature reserve located in Simrishamn town and stretches between the settlement and the sea. The area is a remnant of the old natural pastures that previously covered a large part of the Scanian coastal landscape. There are rock carvings from the Bronze Age on some of the boulders.

Rare plants

Skansen has a varied nature that consists of rocky ground, dry meadows and wetter areas. The soil cover is thin and in some places the sandstone is exposed. The reserve has an interesting flora with several threatened species, including meadowsweet, spring chickweed and the aquatic plant creeping waterwort. The rare orchid cuckoo flower also grows in the reserve.

Lively frog ponds

In late spring and early summer, you can hear the emerald green leaf frog playing in the reserve, and in Skansen's small ponds you can also experience the bell frog and the great and small newts.

Rock carvings

The area is rich in ancient remains and on some of the smooth sandstone outcrops you can study rock carvings dating back to the Bronze Age. In the eastern part of the reserve is a boulder, a large square block of unknown origin, called Tjyvastenen. It is traditionally celebrated here on Walpurgis Night with a large bonfire.

Outdoor life

There are no marked trails in this small nature reserve close to the city, but it is of course possible to roam freely. Don't miss looking for the rock carvings in the area. The Skåneleden trail (SL4 Österlen, stage 4) runs through the reserve. Parking is available nearby and Simrishamn has both a train and bus station. Remember to take your rubbish home.
