Boarps hed, Naturreservat

The beautiful heathland just outside Linderöd is a piece of living cultural history. Here you can walk in the open heaths that covered large parts of Linderödsåsen in the 18th and 19th centuries. Traditional management through grazing and burning keeps the area open and sparsely populated. When the heather blooms in August, the gently rolling hills glow in purple tones.

Remains of extensive heather moorland

Heather moors were once a common habitat type on sandy, gravelly and nutrient-poor soils but are a rarity in today's landscape. They were the result of the deforestation that took place in the 17th century. The Boarps hed nature reserve is only a quarter of the heather moor that existed at Boarp at the end of the 18th century. The heather moors were once used as pasture and management also included burning the heath at regular intervals. The ash nourished the poor soil and the heather plants that survived the fire were able to grow new shoots.

Högabjär

On the hill Högabjär, 183 meters above sea level, you look out over the hilly landscape with its soft hills. The granite bedrock is covered by a thin, lean layer of soil and the field layer is dominated by heather and grass. Flowers such as haymaking, bluebell, pig's-foot and meadowsweet grow here. In the damp hollows between the hills, cranberries, hemlock and bellflower thrive.

Worth a visit in late summer

The flowering plants, especially the heather that blooms in August, attract many insects and butterflies. You can also find both bilberries and lingonberries on the heath.

Outdoor life

Boarps hed is a grazed heath. A road runs through the reserve in an east-west direction. Parking is available in the eastern part. Avoid dogs among the grazing animals. Remember to take your rubbish home.

Traditional management through grazing and burning keeps the area open and the vegetation low. When the heather blooms in August the rolling hills are luminescent with various shades of purple.

Wide-open Heaths

In the past, heather heath was a common habitat on sandy, gravelly and nutrient-poor ground, but today it is a rare feature of the contemporary landscape. This is the result of the destruction of the forests that took place in the 17th century. Boarps Hed (Boarp Heath) Nature Reserve represents only a quarter of the area covered by heather heath around Boarp at the end of the 18th century. The heaths were used in the past for grazing and the management also involved burning the heather at regular intervals. The ash contributed nutrients to the meagre soils and the heather plants that survived the fire could grow new shoots.

Wolf's Bane and Cross-leaved Heath

A thin, meager layer of soil and a field layer dominated by heather and grass lie on top of the bedrock. Flowers such as wolf's bane, harebell, viper's-grass and devil's-bit grow here. Cranberry, bog bilberry and cross-leaved heath thrive in the damp hollows.
