Description
In 1882, construction began on the railway from Luleå to Gällivare and on to Kiruna. The work was carried out by an English company, and at most around 3,700 workers participated in the large project. When the railway reached Gällivare in December 1887, a total of 42 bridges had been built along the route.
The route through the community also created conflicts. For a long time, the parish priest J.O. Curtelius resisted leaving the old rectory, which was in the way of the railway. In the end, he was forced to move to the new rectory after the master builder H. Wennerström began taking timber from the old rectory to save time in the work of piling and bridge abutments.
