Björnåsen, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Gävleborgs län
Actions
Description
The nature reserve consists of the Björnåsen mountain and the forest north of the Dellensjöarna lakes in northern Hälsingland. There are no paths in the area, so you can roam freely in the forest. Be aware that it can be dangerous to walk among storm-felled trees. Björnåsen's steep and partly inaccessible terrain is probably the reason why the forest in the area has not been affected much by modern forestry.
The area has been affected by extensive storm felling, probably in connection with Storm Ivar in December 2013. The Kransarnas and Svarvtjärnsbergen nature reserves are located near Björnåsen.
Large pine trees
Björnåsen covers an area of about 54 hectares of valuable natural forest and is located about 6 kilometers west of Bergsjö. The hills and parts of the slopes are dominated by old pine forests on poor soil. Further down the slopes, the mix of spruce increases. Old, coarse pines are common throughout the area.
Traces of fires
The pines, together with the large number of burnt stumps, bear witness to the recurring forest fires in Björnåsen's forests. On the northern slope between the two peaks there is a depression.
Here the pine forest changes into an old spruce forest with a high proportion of leaves. Woodland fungi and lichens such as scented leather, pine tick, large aspen tick, spruce tick, violet-grey thorn lichen and aspen yellow lichen have been found in the area.
Animals in Björnåsen
Many birds thrive in Björnåsen. Three-toed woodpeckers and capercaillie have been observed in the area. The three-toed woodpecker nests in coniferous and mixed forests, including mountain birch forests, with large numbers of dead and dying trees. The menu includes insects and caterpillars.
