Sven av Arboga, Helge Svens kapell

Sven of Arboga is a local Swedish saint with no known sainthood. The oldest written source believed to be from the 14th century, a chronicle written by a Franciscan monk, states that St. Sven was a renlefnadsman, that is, a monk, who was murdered by wrongdoers. Recent sources say that he was venerated and preserved in popular memory as the first martyr of Arbogas. His name is mentioned second after the Mother of God Mary in a list of saints venerated in Arboga in the Middle Ages. According to tradition, Sven was murdered by pagans. The spring that gushed forth his blood has borne his name ever since. The chapel, which is now a ruin, is called Saint Sven's Chapel. The street and bridge leading to the site are still called Kapellgatan and Kapellbron, and in the 1890s a reliquary was found during an archaeological excavation, but whose relics it contains is not entirely certain. Today the chapel is marked with a sign, while the spring was clogged.
