Description
The western slope of Sjöjden is home to real old-growth forest. The slope is quite steep, so take it easy and look around. Eventually it levels out so it becomes easier to walk. The forest is mostly spruce, but there are also many old, coarse aspens and willows. Such trees have become very rare in the cultivated landscape.
If you smell something very nice in the forest - walk against the wind and look for an old willow tree and you might find the creamy-white scented tick on the trunk. The scented tick used to be kept in linen cupboards but is now so rare that it has been protected. The three-toed woodpecker also nests in the forest. You can see traces of it on old spruces, where the bird has pecked rings around the trunk to drink sap.

Directions
From Lycksele, follow the road south towards Hedlunda, Gäddträsk and Örträsk. After about 20 km, on the outskirts of the village of Gäddträsk, there is a swimming area and a parking lot. From Örträsk you go north towards Lycksele. If you are coming from Umeå or Vindeln, you can cross the bridge at Granö, and follow the forest roads via Byssträsk. This road may be unplowed in winter, and possibly closed during the thaw in spring.
