Description
Näverkärr was protected in 1964 and is Bohuslän's first nature reserve. The area attracts most visitors during spring and summer.
In spring, lots of cowslips bloom in the deciduous forest, and on the beach in Kalsvik. During the summer, the same flower-rich beach attracts both lots of butterflies and bathers. Inner Sköllbergsvik and Näverkärrsvik are also popular places for natural swimming.
The nature reserve takes its name from the Näverkärr farm on the outermost tip of Härnäset. The forest in the eastern part of the area is called Storskogen. It is lush and with several giant trees almost 200 years old, this coastal forest is unique of its kind in Bohuslän.
Disabled parking is available in the reserve parking lot. From the farm there is a gravel road / path down to the beach in Kalsvik. There are accessible benches with a fireplace, as well as two fire pits further out on the beach. Remember to bring your own firewood. There is no wood storage.
Do not miss going up Kalviksberget. The detour to the view is marked with white poles and is almost 350 m long. The reward is a 360-degree view of the area, and a wide horizon towards infinity. The paths in the reserve are well marked. Stage 15 of the Kuststigen (Röe-Näverkärr) runs through the reserve.
The fact that the centuries-old Storskogen forest at Näverkärr could be protected was not self-evident. During the early 20th century, the forest had been threatened with felling on several occasions. We have Signe Benjour to thank for the forest not being felled. You can read more about her and her efforts to save the forest on information signs at the reserve parking lot.
Näverkärr became the first reserve in the West Coast Foundation's operations. Even before that, an agreement was signed in 1963 between the Foundation and the owner to protect the property. The Foundation was bequeathed the Näverkärr farm in 2014 and has since begun to renovate it. The farmhouse itself was probably built in the 18th century, but the farm is said to have been owned by the same family since the Middle Ages.
