How prepared are you if your daily life suddenly changes? On September 20, the County Administrative Board invites you to Hälleskogsbrännan Day, where nature experiences, family activities, and emergency preparedness take center stage.

What’s happening during the day?

There’s something for everyone, young and old. Among other things, you can try starting a fire with a fire steel, take a quiz walk on the theme of emergency preparedness, meet trackers, and learn more about our predators. The grill areas will be set up, so feel free to bring your own sausages or dough to bake stick bread over the fire (recipe suggestions are at the bottom of the page).

Locally Grown and Locally Produced = Preparedness

Throughout the day, you can sample locally grown emergency food. The Arboga-based company Hasta Eco will be serving kolbullar, a traditional dish cooked over an open fire. Kolbullar are an example of nutritious and sustainable food that can serve as a reliable option even during prolonged disruptions to daily life.We’ll also be serving locally baked coffee bread, boiled coffee, and Festis while supplies last. Take the opportunity to enjoy a coffee break and reflect on the role that local ingredients and producers play in our preparedness.

Meet the emergency services and see a safety vehicle

The emergency services will be on site with a fire truck. Here, you can talk to the firefighters about their work and get tips on how we can work together to reduce the risk of forest and wildland fires. The Municipality of Sala will also be showcasing its emergency response vehicle—a mobile communications and safety hub where you can, among other things, make emergency calls and charge your phones.

Nature Tours and Award-Winning Architecture

Nature tours of the reserve will be offered throughout the day. Architect Mikael Hassel, who designed the buildings at Grävlingsberget, will also discuss the award-winning structures that received the 2019 Västmanland Architecture Award.

10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

• The fire department will be on site with a fire truck (unless they are called out to an emergency). Take the opportunity to talk to the firefighters about their work and what we can keep in mind when we’re out in the woods and countryside to avoid starting fires.
• The City of Sala will showcase its safety van. The van serves as a mobile communication and safety hub where you can, among other things, make emergency calls and charge phones and other devices.
• Predator trackers will be on site to demonstrate the predator box.
• Discuss home emergency preparedness with the County Administrative Board.
• If you’re curious about anything related to the nature reserve or the local natural environment, staff from the County Administrative Board will be on site to answer your questions.
• The barbecue areas are set up, so you can bring your own hot dogs to grill. Bake stick bread—bring your own dough; we’ll provide the sticks!
• Food without electricity—sample locally grown emergency rations. The Arboga-based company Hasta Eco will be on site serving samples of kolbullar made from their own mix of buckwheat, oats, and gray peas. Starting at 10 a.m. and while supplies last. Come and try some!
• Locally produced pastries = emergency snacks—We’re serving locally baked pastries, brewed coffee, and Festis while supplies last. First come, first served!
• A quiz walk with an emergency preparedness theme, featuring questions for children and adults. The quiz walk starts at the outdoor classroom.

11:00 a.m.

The County Administrative Board will lead a guided walk along Hellestigen, with a theme related to the new signs about “dead wood and biodiversity.” Meet at the southern end of the parking lot, where Hellestigen begins.

12:00 PM

The County Administrative Board will lead a guided tour and discuss how the birdlife has changed since the fire. Meet at the outdoor classroom.

1:00 PM

Architect Mikael Hassel will show and talk about the buildings at Grävlingsberget. Meet at the outdoor classroom.

2:00 PM

Try your hand at starting a fire with a fire steel. The County Administrative Board will provide the equipment and offer helpful tips and advice. Meet at the outdoor classroom.
