Description
The Ammarnäs delta is an important resting place for many of Vindelfjällen's migratory birds. Here they have an opportunity to rest while waiting for spring to reach higher up the mountain. Among the bird species that use the area every year are the barnacle goose, double snipe, narrow-billed godwit and ruff. The latter two also nest here, along with the common guillemot, common tern, common tern, common sandpiper and black-necked grebe.
The area is a very important resting place for the mountain geese that breed in Sweden.
The Ammarnäs delta has been formed where the Vindelälven and Tjulån rivers flow into Gautsträsk. Most of the area is hay meadows and pastures that have been cultivated since the 1820s when the first settler came to Ammarnäs. The area south of the river, around Söravan, is currently grazed by cows. North of the river, the land is mainly managed by haymaking.
