Description
Limestone coniferous forest with fiddlehead fern and other interesting fungi. In the past, the forests were used in a variety of ways, and this was also the case here in Vamsta. The forest bears the traces of grazing, cultivation and ploughing, and the mire has probably been hayfield. There are also several old coal bunkers. However, there has never been any large-scale felling, the trees have grown old and there are both dead and dying trees between the viable trunks. The fact that they are allowed to remain is appreciated not least by all the woodpeckers that live here.
The lime content of the soil is high and therefore both beautiful orchids and slightly less beautiful but rare mushrooms grow here. In spring, the ground is covered with bluebells and in summer it's time for woodruff and wood anemones. Many fungi in the Vamsta forest form mycorrhizas, i.e. live in symbiosis with old spruces, which is why it is important to preserve forests like this. Thirteen witch rings of the endangered species violet-headed fungus have been found here and the area is considered a core area for the fungus.
There is a path that leads around the entire reserve. The path is not very well trodden, so keep an eye on the markings! You can pick berries and edible mushrooms, but remember to leave the protected plants and mushrooms alone.
