Fäbodmossen
- Nature reserve
- County: Uppsala län
Actions
Currently
As a result of the dry summer of 2018 and the spruce bark beetle infestation, there are a lot of dead spruces in the reserve. There is a high risk of dead spruces falling and we advise you not to visit the area in windy weather.
Description
Just two miles from the center of Uppsala you can experience real wilderness. At Fäbodmossen it is as if time has stood still. Centuries-old pine trees rustle, you hear the lonely call of a bird, but otherwise it is completely silent.
In the nature reserve there are bogs and wetlands of various kinds surrounded by coniferous forest. In the northern part, 300-year-old pine trees grow. The wetlands have never been drained, which is unusual for this region. Old maps show that the marshes were mown in the 1800s. The name Fäbodmossen suggests that there used to be mountain farms in the area.
The Linnaeus Trail Jumkilsvandringen runs right through the northern part of the reserve. Linnaeus made many excursions to the area in the middle of the 18th century, and they certainly botanized at Fäbodmossen. Perhaps they, like today's visitors, were struck by the spring clouds of white-flowering water lilies. Today's Linnaeus Trail starts at Studentvilan, a bit west of Fäbodmossen. This is where Linnaeus and his companions rested under the pine trees and the name lived on in the oral tradition of the area.
Make a visit to Fäbodmossen in late summer. There are plenty of blueberries in the forest, but remember to leave the wilderness as desolate as when you arrived. Apart from the Linnaeus Trail, there are no marked paths in the reserve.
