Description

The well-preserved Groddagården tells the story of Gotland's settlement history, as well as a piece of personal and musical history.

The buildings and the farm

The farm is located in a small-scale open agricultural landscape. The residential building in limestone is a very well-preserved two-story residential building. Probably built in the first half of the 18th century. The Grodde farm was an inn where the farmer could arrange food, somewhere to sleep and a ride for those who wanted.

Both the exterior and interior of the house look much as they always have. The living room has splash-painted walls, the kitchen still has its limestone floor and fireplace. Downstairs there is also a chamber and a smaller room. Upstairs is the great hall, perhaps one of Gotland's finest and most famous rooms, with beautiful paintings, which get a beautiful lighting when the sun's rays find their way in through the windows.

In the courtyard there is also a wing building from the 19th century, built on one floor in stone under a tiled roof.

Music at Groddagården

Lars Olofsson exchanged the farm in 1781. One of his sons, Olof, also called Grodd-Ole, was very skilled at playing the violin and lute. His son, Grodd-Jaken, in turn inherited Olof's cranked lyre, which you can actually see if you visit Fornsalen at the Museum of Gotland. The crank lira is Sweden's best preserved instrument of its type. Grodd-Jaken and his brothers were all good at playing and often gathered all the fiddlers in northern Gotland to play together at Groddagården.
