Stensjön, Naturreservat

Stensjön Nature Reserve is the county's largest area of natural forest. It consists of blocky moraine ridges and slopes with pine forest. In the area you can walk on the nature trail. Or watch birds at the marshes, swamp forest and lake. The waters, the forest and the large boulders offer a great experience. The area covers 1249 hectares and is located 35 kilometers northwest of Friggesund, Hudiksvall municipality.

There are several huge boulders north and east of Stensjön. The forest is largely primeval with elements of coarse pine trees up to 550 years old, as well as dead lying and standing trees.

The area is strongly characterized by natural forest fires. Since 1367, 27 fires have raged in the area, and on average the forest in the area has burned every 40-50 years. In 1320, the country's second oldest known tree sprouted. Having survived eleven fires, it still stands there today in the Stensjön nature reserve.

Many different bird species nest in Stensjön. The reason for the wealth of birds is the varied nature. The forest, together with the marshes, the swamp forest and the lake, attracts nesting Eurasian bitterns, ospreys, avocets and three-toed woodpeckers.
