Gärdes, Naturreservat

Gärdes nature reserve consists of a mixture of different types of wetlands, open wet marshland, wooded richer marshland and wooded solid ground. There are no prepared paths/trails or other facilities in the area, but there are gravel roads leading to the reserve. The marsh area, Gärdes nature reserve, which is designated within the Natura 2000 network, is located 3 kilometers southeast of Rullbo and covers 138 hectares.

The area's high value is primarily linked to the marshes and the species that thrive and are found in these types of areas.

Plants on calcareous soil

The flora in the area is unusually rich with several rare and lime-demanding species. These include the species guckusko, marsh helleborine, slender dunewort, thorny sedge, axagus, mayweed and wiregrass.

This is the only place in Hälsingland where mayweed occurs, and some management of the area is needed to ensure that the species does not disappear. The moss flora is also species-rich with many species of fen.

Designated as a Natura 2000 site

The area was selected in the "Marsh Protection Plan for Sweden" written in 1994. The intention of the mire protection plan is that Sweden's most valuable wetlands should receive long-term protection, which is part of the environmental quality objective of "Flourishing wetlands" set by the Riksdag.
