Kungsberget, Naturreservat

Kungsberget nature reserve has a varied nature of old coniferous forests, occasionally flooded deciduous forests, dramatic mountain slopes and difficult boulder fields. Here you can hike on the well-visited, mostly marked trails. Or have a barbecue and rest at Gillberg's Ide. The cliffs, cave and forest offer exciting nature experiences. Kungsbergets nature reserve is located 6 kilometers northwest of Järbo and covers 79 hectares.

It is possible to cycle on some of the trails in Kungsberget and Kungsfors nature reserve. Keep in mind that it is not allowed to cycle outside the trails. See the attached map under more information.

Exciting nature in Styggbergsbranten

The most exciting nature is in the Styggbergsbrant, which is a so-called south growth mountain. There is a rich flora here, with several plants that otherwise have a more southern distribution, such as hazel, spring barley and golden curl moss.

The slope itself is home to an old and almost untouched mixed coniferous forest with plenty of old trees and lots of dead wood. There are also plenty of older deciduous trees, especially aspens. Many of the species found in the area are linked to old deciduous trees, such as the species lung lichen, coral lead lichen and aspen thorn.

Gillberg's cave idea

Below Styggbergsbranten, a large number of loose blocks have formed a system of block caves. The longest cave is 25 meters long. It is called "Gillbergs ide" after the robber named Gillberg who, according to legend, had his lair there.

Cultural sites in the area

In the north, Lillån forms the border of the nature reserve. The river meanders through dense, periodically flooded deciduous forests of birch, gray alder, rowan, beech, willow and willow. These parts were previously open, cultivated land.

A barn remains as a reminder of that time. There are also plenty of cultural remains from earlier activities in the area, such as coal bunkers, traces of forest huts, and the remains of a ski jump slope from the 1930s.
