Mjölby hembygdsområde

Mjölby hembygdsområdet is an oasis in the middle of the city center, with several red buildings that are cared for by enthusiasts in Mjölby hembygdsförening. There is a museum here with objects that tell the history of the town from mill village to central town. **Mjölby was called Mölloby in ancient Swedish, from mylna or mölna, which means mill. Farmers from near and far came here to grind their grain at the rapids and falls of the Svartån river. The area around Mjölby has been inhabited for a long time, as evidenced by all the burial grounds, rune stones, cathedral rings and ancient castles in the area. During the 18th century, the number of mills increased, but in 1771 a major fire destroyed all but two of them. In 1828 there were again eleven mills.

In 1873 the railroad was built, which is still an important link for communication today. Mjölby became a town in 1920. Today, around 13,000 people live in the town, which despite its growth has retained many of the advantages of a small town. Everything you need is here, and it's close to everything. The Svartån river that runs through the city and many beautiful landscaping and green areas make it inviting to walk here.
