Arkeologi vid Motala ström

Motala may be young as a city (1881) but it has been a favorable place to live for 8000 years! The excavation area by the Motala stream and canal soil has turned out to contain sensational finds. Motala now stands out as one of northern Europe's most interesting sites from the Early Stone Age. Here is an extensive and very well-preserved settlement complex with 7000 - 8000 year old traces of houses, crafts, hunting, fishing and burials. On the bottom of a now overgrown small lake, human skulls have been placed on piles. The investigations have also resulted in the oldest known traces, 11,000 years old, of people in Östergötland.
