Several towns are located near Sottern, including Svennevad, Kilsmo and Brevens bruk.

**In the nature reserve it is forbidden to

1. disturb wildlife by, for example, close-up photography of birds' nests or by climbing nest trees
2. break branches, fell or otherwise damage living or dead trees and bushes
3. bringing an unleashed dog
4. during the period April 15 - July 15, land on islands or travel by boat, canoe or equivalent, within the water area west of a line from Sofieholmen through the strait northwest of Stora Gröningen to Gillberga näs
5. during the period April 15 - August 1, land on islands with nesting ospreys (however, this does not apply to the islands under point 8 below)
6. permanently moor or moor a boat on the islands and mainland shores of the reserve
7. make fires other than in designated places
8. camping other than on the islands Trindholmen, Norrholmen, Käringholmen and Stora Gröningen and then for a maximum of 1 day
9. affix a board, poster, poster, sign, inscription, or comparable device
