Impressive tree giants and a rich flora make Rudalund's beautiful pastures a popular destination for excursions. The oldest trees are probably up to 500 years old! Many unusual species that depend on old, decaying deciduous trees for their survival have a sanctuary in the reserve.

Used for a long time

Until the beginning of the 19th century, what is now a nature reserve was the village of Ruda's pasture and hay fields. After that, the land came to belong to Ruda farm and over time was largely cultivated. The area west of the railroad is commonly called Rudalund. The annual "Rudalundsfesten" was celebrated here in the 1900s. Dance floors were set up inside the giant oaks and the grove was visited by famous orchestras and artists. Two dance floors still exist and remind us of the party era.

Home to many

Rudalund's pastures are characterized by a large number of giant oak and lime trees. The old trees are host to many threatened and rare organisms. Lichens such as shadow orange lichen, yellow drop lichen and lung lichen grow on the trees' coarse, rough bark. On coarser, recently dead or weakened oak branches, the white oak bark beetle grows. Leatherjackets, oak bark beetles and black beetles are wood-boring beetles that depend on old trees for all or part of their life cycle.

Bird life

Rudalund's giant trees are also valuable for birdlife. Lesser spotted woodpeckers, barn owls and cuckoos nest in the hollows that form in the old trees over time. Other unusual birds in the reserve include the common crow, shrike and nutcracker. The nutcracker's favorite food is hazelnuts and benefits from the abundance of hazel in the area.

Flower plumage

There is a fine flora in the open areas of the reserve. Where it is dry, wood anemone, wood anemone, spiderwort and almond flower grow. On healthier ground, the flowers include hayloft, summer violet, green-white night violet and cowslip. In the more enclosed grove environments, wood anemone, toothwort and small-leaved helleborine thrive.

From the south: drive towards Högsby on road 34. About 1.5 km after Ruda, follow the sign to the right towards Ruda Gård. Take the third gravel road to the left across the field, just before the first large farm building. Follow the farm road straight ahead. Parking on the right on the grass field inside the gate. Please close it after you.

In the nature reserve you are not allowed:

Drive a motorized vehicle off designated roads or trails.
Park a vehicle, caravan or trailer in a place other than designated parking spaces.
Camping for more than 24 hours in the same place.
Climbing trees with nests.
Being close to a bird of prey nest, lair or burrow.
Deliberately disturbing wildlife.
Bringing a dog, or other animal, that is not on a leash.
Make a fire anywhere other than in designated areas, in a barbecue you have brought or in an open-air kitchen.
Picking or damaging mosses, lichens or wood fungi.
Digging or pulling up vascular plants.
Damage or remove trees, stumps, bark, branches, shrubs or brush that are growing or dead.

If you have obtained a permit from the County Administrative Board, you may:

Set traps to collect insects that are then killed.

Full regulations

C. Regulations for the public according to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general within the reserve.

It is forbidden to enter the reserve:

drive motor vehicles other than on existing roads.
set up motor vehicles, caravans or trailers other than on specially designated roads and places
camping for more than one day in the same place
climbing trees, staying close to a bird of prey's nest, lair or pot, or otherwise deliberately damaging or disturbing wildlife
bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet
light a fire other than in a barbecue or outdoor kitchen
Pick or damage wood fungi, mosses or lichens.
Digging or pulling up vascular plants.
Damage or remove growing or dead trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or brush.

It is forbidden to do so without the permission of the County Administrative Board:

collect insects with traps that kill.

It is prohibited without consultation with the County Administrative Board:

trap or collect insects where the animals are killed, except as provided in C 10.

The regulations under C do not apply to owners or holders of special rights to property or holders of other rights.
