Beskrivelse

Hjälmstad's lakes is one of four nature reserves on Södviken and Vässby Bay. The reserve's open pastures and shallow, indented coastline attract many birds. Some stop only temporarily to rest and eat, others build nests and raise their young here. As well as birds, there are also many interesting plants to discover in the open spaces.

Resting place

Hjälmstad's lakes, together with the other reserves in the area, are very valuable for bird life. If you visit the area in the fall and spring, you may see flocks of waders passing through. Large numbers of ducks and geese also rest here. During their stopover, the birds replenish their energy, the geese graze on the coastal meadows and the waders feed on small insects in the shallow bays.

Strings and walls

Grazing animals have been grazing on the islands since the early Iron Age. Strings of stones still exist, showing how ancient people fenced in the animals. Much later, in the 19th century, the boundaries looked different. Villagers now plowed up fields and lined them with stone walls. The fields were cultivated until the mid-1940s. This was followed by a period of overgrowth. Now the land is open again and the grazing animals are back!

The importance of grazing

Land that has been grazed for thousands of years has a special flora and fauna. For example, various wading birds thrive on grazed meadows, where they build their nests directly on the ground. The chicks can move around on the short-grass surface, and when the birds are incubating, they can keep an eye on their surroundings. If the grass is too tall, the waders will not nest. Grazing also favors certain plants. For example, plants that need a lot of light or whose seeds prefer to grow in trampled, bare ground. Look out for dwarf rye-grass, mayweed, chickweed and the orchid honeyflower.
