Sundranäs is beautifully situated on a headland in the southern part of Lake Bolmen, just north of the narrow part of the lake known as Kafjorden. In addition to the headland, the reserve also includes a water area with several smaller islands. The most important areas in Sundranäs are ancient beech forests, with elements of oak and maple.
Forests that have been allowed to grow for a long time and contain old, rough trees, as well as a lot of dead wood, are an important environment for a multitude of organisms, such as fungi, lichens, and insects. On and around beech trunks, many tree-dwelling fungi can be found, including the rare giant polypore. The presence of lungwort lichen in the area is usually a sign that forests have been growing there for a long time.
The reserve also features so-called transverse moraines, formed during the melting of the inland ice. Bjurnäsa and Ropareudden are good examples of such moraine formations.
