The mill and saw in Hästhult are unique facilities. It is the only preserved “nickesåg” (vertical frame saw) in Kronoberg County, and only a few equally old mills exist in the county, such as the mill in Gällestorp, which is only a few kilometers away. They were built as a communal facility for the four farms in Hästhult village. Both the saw and the mill were powered by standing water wheels, which no longer exist today. The stream was divided into three channels: one for the saw, one for the mill, and one in the middle that was used as an eel trap. The mill and saw are located just next to the Hästhult Forest Nature Reserve. Here, you can experience how the storm Gudrun changed the forest. The saw, like the mill, is very old. It is difficult to say how old it is, as the construction existed both in the 1600s and into the 1800s.
It is the county’s only preserved “nickesåg,” a frame saw with only one blade that worked vertically. The saw was also powered by a standing water wheel. Previously, there was also a shingle planer connected to the wheel. Under the building, there is a small “skvalthjul” (horizontal water wheel) that controlled the sled that pushed the log towards the saw blade. A small saw chamber previously existed next to the saw.
