The beautiful rudd is one of Sweden’s most colourful fish with its crimson fins and shimmering gold scales. Additional characteristics of the species is its tall build and clear underbite. The rudd is a member of the carp family mainly found in southern and central Sweden, including the east coast, but absent from the mountains and parts of the Småland highlands.

The rudd is typically found close to vegetation in both fresh and brackish water. As with other carp, spawning takes place during spring in shallow water.

Anglers all over Sweden love to fish for rudd. Popular bait includes bread, maggots, and corn, which are usually presented with a match fishing line or bottom fishing. Although several large rudd weighing between 1 kg and 1.4 kg are caught annually, specimens larger than this are very rare. The Swedish sport fishing record for rudd stands at Svartån in Östergötland, weighing in at 1,730 g and 46 cm long.
