Gamla elevhemmet

This building was once home to Sámi students attending Years 7–9 at the nearby
Sjöpark School. Many of the students came from different parts of Gällivare
Municipality, where long distances made daily commuting difficult. The school
also admitted students from across Sweden, so young people travelled to
Gällivare from Sámi communities as far south as the southernmost Sámi regions.

At Sjöpark School, Sámi students were often taught
together in the same classes, while sharing several subjects with the other
pupils.

The student residence was located in the same building that is now the Scandic
Hotel. Each year, it accommodated 40–50 students. The boys' rooms were located
in one wing of the building and the girls' in the other. The building also
contained a dining hall and staff accommodation.
