Beschreibung

Krusenstiernska gården is a well-preserved city garden from the 19th century. It is an oasis of greenery, cultivation, old buildings and a fantastic history.

Here you can have a coffee in the farm's popular café or visit one of the cultural events organized for young and old during the garden's season, which runs from April to mid-September.

A unique document of time

Krusenstiernska gården is named after Hermina von Krusenstierna who bought the estate in 1874 and celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. When Hermina and her husband Philip von Krusenstierna passed away, they were childless and their faithful servant and friend, Hulda Nydell inherited the farm. The farm has been run since the 1950s as a foundation according to Hulda's wishes.

When Hermina moved to the farm in 1874, there was already a well-developed garden. A drawing from 1872 shows how the garden was laid out with a French, more strict part with a kitchen garden and vegetable garden and a German, more romantic pleasure garden with winding paths, grass areas and flower beds. In the kitchen garden, vegetables were grown in beds and the blocks were lined with rows of fruit trees and strips of berry bushes or flowers. There were also greenhouses where lettuce, beans and melons were grown. An important part was a large asparagus field.

Seeds were also purchased and lists are preserved in the county museum archives. In 1876, seeds were purchased for growing carrots, onions, beetroot, parsnips, radishes, parsley, as well as asters, cowslips and other flowers. A fruit list from the same period lists 20 varieties of apples, 15 varieties of pears and 7 varieties of plums.

The romantic pleasure garden was a place for relaxation and pleasure. The design was very popular in the second half of the 19th century. The gently curving paths would add variety to the walk through the garden. Trees, ornamental shrubs and flowers were placed to enhance the experience. The garden was adorned with pedestals with shiny glass balls and shells along the paths and flower beds.

The garden is very similar today and if Hermina were to visit, she would recognize it well. She would, however, wonder why a large area of grass is unused and not cultivated.

Welcome in when the gates are open from mid-April to mid-September. Stroll around the beautiful garden and enjoy. Visit the café, the small shop or one of the many cultural events that are organized.

"There is virtually no other similar well-preserved urban farm in Sweden today where the garden also remains. The site is therefore a unique document of garden history and garden archaeology, and how it is managed is therefore very important."
