Stora Ryet, fossila åkermarker

100 years ago, the landscape around you consisted of
large cleared and cultivated agricultural lands. These are now abandoned and
called fossil farmlands. The remains today are stone walls and cairns, and they
act as small biotopes, important habitats for many species. In modern
agriculture with larger open spaces, old cairns and stone walls act as
important green transport routes that facilitate the movement of many animals
in the landscape.
